Kerala State Pollution Control Board (PCB) is targeting Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL) with a show-cause notice about operational consent. Dated June 17,2026,this notice demands explanation why board shouldn't revoke company's license under Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act,1981.
PCB's Environmental Surveillance Centre in Eloor inspected on June 8,uncovering major pollution issues. Thick smoke billowed from calciner stack, strong odor filled air. Black smoke from roaster stacks added to worries. And absence of delay pond near Periyar River raised more alarms. Incinerator, which was supposed to be dismantled, still stood, filled with waste like plastic bags.
Monitoring by PCB on December 4, 2025, showed dangerous air pollution levels . Particulate matter hit 18,128 mg/Nm3 — permissible limit is just 250 mg/Nm3. Carbon monoxide? 4,540 mg/Nm3 against a limit of 175 mg/Nm3. Air pollution controls clearly failing.
On January 3, 2026,PCB had already ordered CMRL to dismantle incinerator to stop waste burning. Company officials insisted incinerator wasn't used for plastic or waste, just for tree and coconut leaves.
After the notice,CMRL reps said they'd respond in detail after reviewing document. PCB's action highlights ongoing regional pollution worries…what's next for CMRL?
