In a decisive move to tackle narcotics activities, local law enforcement in Kozhikode is stepping up its anti-drug operations. The initiative leverages advanced aerial technology to improve oversight and enforcement throughout region.
Authorities have deployed two skilled drone operators, tasked with conducting systematic aerial assessments of critical areas . Their operations will focus on key locales, including transportation hubs like bus stands and railway stations, as well as less trafficked sites such as abandoned factories and workers' camps. Recent investigative efforts informed this targeted approach, highlighting areas at a higher risk for drug-related activities.
This drone initiative forms a crucial part of a broader strategy aimed at disrupting illegal drug trade. In tandem with aerial operations, ground inspections have gained momentum through the efforts of the district's canine unit, overseen by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) P.K . Dhananjaya Babu. The unit, utilizing three specially trained narcotics detection dogs—Blacky,Robin, and Kiya—enhances the effectiveness of surprise inspections and search operations.
Intensified efforts under Operation Toofan, statewide anti-drug initiative, have seen specialized teams execute rigorous inspections. Law enforcement reports indicate a substantial rise in drug-related arrests, attributed to the cooperative actions of these specialized units and other local police forces. The campaign is projected to expand even further,as additional sites are targeted for intervention based on ongoing intelligence assessments.
Data from the District Crime Records Bureau highlights significant uptick in activity, with law enforcement apprehending 615 individuals suspected of drug offenses in the last month alone . Coupled with this surge in arrests, nearly 600 cases have been filed as a result of the concerted actions of the district's anti-narcotics team and a dedicated strike force. During this timeframe, authorities confiscated 318.65 grams of suspected MDMA, along with a range of other illegal substances, including ganja and hashish oil, from various locations throughout Kozhikode .
A high-ranking official from the District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force (DANSAF) cautioned that any efforts to impede or threaten the safety of anti-drug operatives will not be tolerated and will result in severe consequences. This warning comes in light of recent incidents where officers have faced violent confrontations during their enforcement activities, with some suspects already taken into custody.
