Lotus has unveiled a new strategy, launching Type 135,a V8 hybrid supercar. This marks the brand's return to eight-cylinder engines after 22 years. The shift comes as the company, owned by Geely, steps back from its earlier plan for an all-electric lineup by end of the decade.
Back in late 2021, Lotus aimed to go fully electric by 2030. Now, the new “Focus 2030” plan shows a different direction, with 40% of its offerings as battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and 60% as plug-in hybrids. The company also plans to keep making internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles for foreseeable future.
The Type 135 will sit above the Emira and feature a hybrid system that pairs a new twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine from Mercedes-AMG with cutting-edge hybrid tech. This X Hybrid system, which first appeared in the Eletre electric SUV,lets the gasoline engine drive wheels directly or work as range extender for the battery.
Lotus hasn't shared all the details about the Type 135 yet,but early specs suggest it’ll deliver over 1,000 horsepower . The X Hybrid system uses a 900-volt architecture, cranking out around 940 horsepower and 935 Nm of torque . It promises impressive performance, hitting 0-60 mph in just 3.3 seconds and offering EV-only range of up to 217 miles (350 km).
This hybrid supercar will come with a 70-kWh battery that can charge from 20% to 80% in about nine minutes, plus a 48-volt active anti-roll system. These specs might change before launch, but they show a clear focus on performance.
Visually, the Type 135 is likely inspired by the Theory 1 concept, first shown in September 2024. While official images are still under wraps, early looks hint at a sleek design with standout tailpipes. CEO Feng Qingfeng has suggested the supercar might feature three-seat layout, echoing the classic McLaren F1.
Production will happen in Hethel,England, not China, which could attract Western buyers. As the auto industry shifts,Lotus's move toward hybrid tech aligns with trends where performance and sustainability are increasingly linked .
With Type 135, Lotus seeks to challenge established supercars like Ferrari 849 Testarossa, redefining its identity in a fast-evolving market. return of a V8 Lotus is stirring excitement among fans, marking new chapter for the brand .
