Mother-daughter-in-law team in Chhattisgarh's Surguja district shakes up traditional roles with their floriculture venture. Ratna Majumdar,22,and her mother-in-law,Shanti Majumdar,are turning local farming on its head,cultivating flowers,hoping to make area floral hub.
After marrying into Majumdar family,Ratna saw modest farming and wanted change. Inspired by uncle-in-law's small flower farm,she started growing flowers with little resources. Small start now a booming business,creating local jobs.
Ratna's work has boosted her family's finances and empowered village women and youth. "Floriculture yields much higher profits than paddy,vegetables," she said. Peak seasons bring big wedding,festival orders,flowers now reaching nearby districts too.
Majumdars currently grow flowers on two acres,plans to expand underway. Ratna's hired workers for tasks like plucking,packing,helping business grow.
Shanti Majumdar sees positive changes her daughter-in-law brought. "After Ratna arrived,new energy in home,fields," she said. Family's using modern farming techniques,ditching traditional ways,becoming more self-reliant.
Local flower demand high,but much supply still from other states. Surguja Collector Ajeet Vasant said boosting local production could increase farmers' incomes,strengthen district economy.
