Odisha government is revising spellings of districts,cities,towns to better match original Odia pronunciations. Signboards at government offices changed across 64 locations, but confusion brews over what this means for official documents,online records.

Under Additional Chief Secretary Aravind Padhee's directive, local authorities updating nameplates,display boards. In Cuttack, district collector's office now reads "KATAKA" instead of "CUTTACK". And in Angul, it's "ANUGOLA" now. Part of wider effort to sync English spellings with local sounds.

“We have already instructed all the government offices,corporations to change the spelling and we have done it at the collectorate. Besides, we have made the spelling changes in all government letters,”
said Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde, Cuttack collector . Angul Additional District Magistrate Pratap Pritimaya noted the task's complexity, stating, "This is not a one-day process. It is expensive exercise and will take time." Physical sign replacements will be phased,official records updates already underway .

State government set one-month deadline for government offices to finish. Private institutions have six months. All official correspondence now uses revised spellings. District authorities told to make sure private entities comply. But transition raises questions among public.

“The change is difficult but not impossible. The government should publish a white paper about the changes it wants to make. Accordingly,people will accept that,” said a Cuttack resident. Another from Angul added,“We have already accepted the changes. change in the spelling will help to resolve confusion.”
