Ghana Repatriation: Only Fraction of Returning Nationals Legally Present, South African Officials Reveal
A recent voluntary repatriation initiative saw hundreds of Ghanaian citizens depart South Africa, though immigration personnel at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport disclosed a stark reality: merely 10 of the 300 individuals who presented for their return journey possessed legal residency permits in the country. This finding sharply contrasts prior declarations made by High Commissioner Benjamin Quashie of Ghana.
Mr. Quashie had previously affirmed that every individual enrolled in the repatriation program was a lawful resident of South Africa. He articulated that numerous Ghanaian citizens opted to exit the nation due to perceived insecurity, despite not facing direct aggression.
In light of the discovered disparity, South African officials indicated forthcoming "certain enforcement actions." An immigration authority underscored the imperative of upholding immigration regulations through relevant punitive actions. The initial cohort of repatriates made their exit from the country on Wednesday.
High Commissioner Quashie verified that upwards of 800 Ghanaian nationals had enrolled in the voluntary return initiative. He elaborated on his government's dedication to the welfare of its citizenry.
"A government's paramount obligation is to its populace," he declared. "Even with robust diplomatic ties between our nations, the imperative to guarantee the security of our citizens left us with no alternative."
The repatriation strategy was unveiled on May 18 by Ghanaian Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, with the program slated to commence on May 25.
To ease the process for returning nationals, Ghana's government extended a suite of support measures. These provisions included:
- Support for domestic transit to various points across Ghana following their return.
- A financial allowance intended for reintegration.
- Complimentary psychosocial assistance.
Additionally, returning citizens will be entered into a centralized database designed to connect them with prospective employment and entrepreneurial ventures.
