Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) is pressing Coimbatore district to crack down on encroachments in elephant corridors. The goal: reduce rising human-elephant conflicts. On Monday, district secretary Kovai Raj handed a petition to the District Collector, urging Tamil Nadu to act on Draft Elephant Corridor Plan. The plan marks out 42 corridors statewide,nine in Coimbatore.
Raj pointed to resort development in Anaikatti, an ecologically fragile zone in Western Ghats' foothills. Nearly 50 resorts operate here,many allegedly illegal,within elephant corridors . PMK argues these blockades force elephants into human areas, seeking food and water.
Past 15 years have been deadly. Conflicts claimed 232 wild elephants,over 150 people. Farmers see crops ravaged as elephants push into urban zones . Raj stressed need to dismantle high-voltage fences endangering elephants further.
