Police head constable killed in road crash while on duty during crackdown on illegal sand mining in Koperimadam village on East Coast Road,Monday,June 15,2026. Incident occurred after Devipattinam police team seized three tractors,an excavator from local waterbody,acting on tip-off about gang illegally extracting silt.
After seizure,head constable Mahesh Kumar was driving one of seized tractors back to station when it collided with speeding state transport bus from Nagercoil to Velankanni . Kumar died instantly.
29 bus passengers,including nine women,were injured. Emergency services took at least 15 to Ramanathapuram Government Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Police said Mahesh Kumar had been with force since 2013 . His body sent for post-mortem as investigations continue.
