Indian music world lost a giant Saturday evening. S. Janaki, fondly called 'Janaki amma,' left us on July 11, 2026, at 88 . Her voice, echoing in Telangana homes for six decades, broke language barriers, enriching Indian music.
Janaki's career kicked off in 1957 with MLA, mesmerizing audiences with ‘Nee Aasa Adiyaasa’ and ‘Idenandi Idenandi Bhagyanagaramu,’ thanks to Pendyala Nageshwar Rao. That year, she ventured into Kannada and Tamil, showcasing her amazing versatility. Early Telugu hits included films like Kutumba Gowravam and Anna Thammudu.
‘Neeli Meghalalo’ from Bava Maradalu put her on the map as 'melody queen.' Her collaborations with legends like K.V. Mahadevan, M.S. Viswanathan, and Ilaiyaraaja crafted some of Indian cinema's most beloved tunes. ‘Sirimalle Puvva’ from Padaharella Vayasu remains a timeless classic.
With Ilaiyaraaja,Janaki defined soundtracks for iconic films by K. Viswanath. ‘Mounamelanoyi’ from Sagara Sangamam captured unspoken love. ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ from same film showed her emotional depth. Later works like ‘Suvvi Suvvi’ for Swathi Muthyam kept her folk and classical roots alive.
In the 1980s and 1990s,she delivered romantic hits cementing her status in Telugu cinema. Songs like ‘Guvva Gorinkatho’ from Khaidi No. 786 and ‘Yamaho nee yama yama andam’ from Jagadeka Veerudu Atilokasundari still charm audiences. Her talents earned her a National Award for “Vennello Godari Andham” in Sitara.
Tributes flooded in after her passing. A. Revanth Reddy, Telangana's Chief Minister,KT Rama Rao,BRS working president, and film figures like Chiranjeevi shared heartfelt memories of Janaki's musical impact.
Her roots in Sircilla, old Karimnagar district, added layers to her legacy . Though born in present Andhra Pradesh, Sircilla shaped her passion for music and cinema . This connection made her legacy in Telangana even deeper.
For generations, Janaki was more than a playback singer; she embodied love, devotion, and nostalgia. Her authentic touch in romantic, classical, devotional, and folk songs set her apart. As music world reflects on her journey, her voice keeps echoing.
