His music draws from ragas like Mukhari,Haimavathy,Kamboji. “I enjoyed the challenge of making the songs work,” he says, noting the popularity of his creations.
Samji's musical journey kicked off in the 1970s, working with big names in Malayalam music. He started singing at eight or nine,no formal training. School and college festivals fueled his passion, earning him awards, including a first prize for light music at Kerala University.
His first music teacher, Rugmini Amma,a gold medallist from Madras Music Academy, was key in his early education. Samji learned from several mentors. “But I am still learning,” he says, acknowledging music's ever-changing nature.
In 1973,Samji's career shifted when he passed an Akashavani audition, leading to his first composition,‘Devalaya Nada Thurannu….’ A music producer urged him to explore opportunities in Chennai, resulting in a hit EP and work with stars like Yesudas,S Janaki, and SP Balasubramaniam.

Samji stresses the role of lyrics in his process. “I get the lyrics into my head first,” he mentions, then explores music with the harmonium. His commitment is strong . “There is never a day without music in my life, and there never will be,” he declares .
