Salem Railway Division slapped fines on 301 passengers without tickets during a late-night crackdown Sunday. The operation zeroed in on Coimbatore-Silchar Weekly Express (Train No. 15627) as it headed from Coimbatore to Salem.

Divisional Railway Manager Panna Lal and Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Y. Saravanakumar led a 16-member team of ticket-checkers. They combed through train. The drive came after complaints surged about unauthorized passengers taking over reserved compartments, leaving valid ticket holders in the lurch.

Checks forced over 40 unauthorized riders out of reserved sections, moving them to general compartments. Penalties totaled ₹2.64 lakh, collected from those without tickets or carrying invalid ones.

Salem Railway Division says these strict checks will continue to make sure reserved seats go to those with valid tickets. But will it be enough to deter repeat offenders…
