A construction site in Moshi,Pune district, became the scene of a tragic accident on Wednesday afternoon when a section of building at a waste-to-energy plant collapsed, trapping 16 workers. As of now, seven individuals have been rescued, while efforts continue to free the remaining nine workers still trapped beneath the rubble.
The incident occurred during heavy rainfall, which caused large mound of legacy waste to dislodge and strike the building . Vijay Suryawanshi, the commissioner of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, confirmed that the structure was part of a public-private partnership project aimed at enhancing waste management in area.
Emergency responders, including local police and disaster management units, quickly arrived at scene to assist in the rescue operation. Ambulances were also dispatched to provide medical support as family members of the trapped workers gathered anxiously nearby. Rescue teams utilized specialized equipment to lift concrete slabs and steel girders in their search for survivors.
In a related incident, safety railings of a bridge located approximately 500 meters from the collapsed building were reported damaged, with one of its slabs displaced. Authorities are investigating both incidents separately and have not established any direct connection between them.
The collapse raises serious concerns about safety standards at construction sites, particularly those involving public infrastructure projects. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has been under scrutiny for its management of such projects, especially in light of the heavy rains that have affected the region recently.
As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of workers still trapped. Local officials are expected to provide updates as the situation develops. The community is rallying around the affected families, hoping for a swift and safe resolution to this tragic event.
