Head of Taiwanese volunteer group urges Taiwan-China cooperation on maritime emergencies. Yin Liu-sheng, secretary general of Chinese Search and Rescue Association,made plea in Xiamen,Fujian province,Sunday. Stressed “maritime search and rescue should remain completely above politics,” calling for joint efforts to protect lives and property in Taiwan Strait.

Once,Beijing and Taipei worked closely here . But not since 2016. Joint exercises stopped after Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party,which leans toward independence,came to power .
From 2010 to 2014,three joint search-and-rescue drills happened under a 2008 sea transport agreement . Included a coordination mechanism for search-and-rescue,now inactive. Yin's call for renewed cooperation underscores urgent need for safety in these perilous waters…
