Union leaders have pointed to critical staff shortages and safety lapses as the root causes of a deadly explosion at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on June 8,2026, which resulted in the deaths of eight workers. The Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) union has publicly criticized both the management and ruling coalition government for their roles in the tragedy.
During a press conference, union vice-president Varasala Srinivasa Rao stated that the explosion was a direct result of a significant reduction in workforce and neglect of essential equipment maintenance. He revealed that the permanent workforce has plummeted from 18,500 to just 8,500 over the past 25 months, while the number of contract workers has nearly halved. This drastic cut has led to increased workloads for remaining staff, raising concerns about operational safety.
Rao further alleged that management's decision to procure substandard raw materials has exacerbated the situation, leading to damage in heavy machinery and forcing multiple departments to cease operations. The union's claims underscore a growing frustration among workers regarding safety protocols and operational standards at the facility.
The incident has raised alarms about the plant's safety practices, prompting calls for immediate action to address the staffing and maintenance issues that have been neglected for too long.
