After twin earthquakes rocked Venezuela last week,residents find themselves struggling as government aid remains sparse. Quakes of 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude hit La Guaira in quick succession,demolishing nearly 800 buildings and killing over 1,700,says Interim President Delcy Rodríguez.
In La Guaira,desperation hangs heavy. Locals dig through debris with crowbars,pickaxes,even bare hands,searching for survivors. Many still unaccounted for. A 21-year-old man pulled out alive after more than 100 hours, but such rescues are rare now.
Monday brought another jolt — a 4.6 aftershock hit La Guaira and Caracas,heightening anxiety. In Catia La Mar,volunteers,international teams lead search efforts. Frustration grows with government absence in chaotic streets.
Ruben Rojas, a 32-year-old electrician,slams government response, saying civil protection lacks tools to help properly. "They are just like us,working with their hands," he said, pointing to scarce resources.
Heavy machinery in La Guaira? Inconsistent. Often too late. Carolyn Zerpa, 39, now focuses on recovery, searching for her father and brother in rubble. "You can't really do much with just a pickaxe," she sighed.
Local Zuly Marín blames slow response for costing lives. "I lost my niece and brother-in-law. If they came sooner, many could have been saved," she said, echoing many who feel left behind.
El Junquito,west of Caracas,sees few officials. Keily Ibarra, 33, frustrated, says, "We wait for answers, for debris to be cleared, for real help." Community steps in,providing basic supplies to those in need .
In crisis response,Rodríguez announced a commission to assess damage,led by her brother,National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez. Temporary camps set up for displaced people .
