National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) plans to kick off NIOS Mitra programme in Yadgir,Karnataka . Goal: bring back 1,747 out-of-school kids aged 14-18 into formal education. Ministry of Education is backing this, starting July. programme will spot, counsel,enroll these kids through community outreach.

NIOS Mitra uses trained facilitators — mitras — to support students all year,guiding them until exams . Targets vulnerable groups: kids with disabilities,tribal kids, those hit by child labor and early marriage.

Periodic Labour Force Survey data shows over 20 million Indian kids in this age group are out of school. Pilot of NIOS Mitra will span ten districts in nine states. Yadgir chosen in Karnataka.

Local Education Department's door-to-door survey found dropout reasons are many. Samagra Shikshana Karnataka official said many girls quit school due to underage marriages. Plus,financial issues make families keep one child home when they can't afford to send all. Some kids leave school to work in agriculture,others stay home to mind younger siblings when parents work.

V. Swaminathan, NIOS regional director in Bengaluru,said awareness drives will hit Yadgir villages by end of June to inform families. Three government schools in Yadgir are now NIOS Accredited Institutions (AIs), acting as hubs for students to get study materials,apply for exams,get academic support .

Initiative will team up with departments like Minority Welfare Department, Waqf Board, Madrasa Boards to find out-of-school kids from minority communities . Also, Department of Women and Child Development,Health Department will help

Problems like child labor,migration,early marriage tackled through Child Welfare Committee,Childline 1098, ensuring broad approach to getting these kids back into education .

NIOS registration happens in two phases: March 16-July 31 and September 16-January 31 . First year, Ministry of Education will give ₹2,000 per child for exam fees,books,other expenses. From second year,students cover their own admission costs. Programme will also link these kids with skill development initiatives under various Union government schemes …
