Police in Guwahati charged a couple for hosting birthday bash on Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu bridge over Brahmaputra River. Just a day earlier,they arrested 14 for something similar. Surajit Mandal and wife,Bijaya Mandal,were detained Wednesday,June 24,2026,after video of their party went viral on social media.

The bridge links Guwahati and North Guwahati,inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February. Cost ₹3,030 crore. The Mandals reportedly stopped traffic with electronic sparklers,firecrackers during their celebration,police said. Date of event not disclosed.

Bharalumukh police charged the Mandals under several sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita: Section 285 for creating danger or obstruction in public way,Section 270 for public nuisance,Section 125 for acts endangering life or personal safety. Officer confirmed SUV linked to event was confiscated.

Meanwhile,Gautam Baruah,businessman,and 13 others who celebrated birthday on same bridge June 21 got bail same day as Mandals' arrest. Police said charges were bailable,they were released after medical exams,biometric checks .
