University of Calicut is cracking down on principal qualifications at self-financing colleges, targeting those falling short of University Grants Commission (UGC) standards. This comes after university mandated assistant professors in these institutions must pass UGC-National Eligibility Test or hold PhD.
June 18 letter from Registrar C.D. Sebastian alerted college managers,principals: Centralised College Portal review showed many principals lack required qualifications . Some government,aided colleges also missed standards or didn't update portal.
“Despite explicit and repeated general instructions issued by this university on multiple occasions,it is observed with grave concern that these directives are not being honoured by the managements of several self-financing colleges,” Sebastian stated. He stressed all college managements must comply with UGC regulations, university statutes when appointing principals .
Colleges with unqualified principals urged to fix issue immediately. University gave 15-day deadline for affiliated colleges to update principal qualifications in college development council section .
Failure to comply,will be seen as “deliberate violation of university norms,” leading university to consider strict disciplinary actions without notice.
But some principals oppose move,argue many have over 20 years of experience. They warn sweeping actions could disrupt college operations…
