Key Takeaways

  • Delhi Public School's 'kindness table' program invites community nominations for students demonstrating kindness, rewarding them with badges and meals with the head of school.
  • Saandeepani Academy's 'restorative circles' allow students to resolve conflicts through discussion, promoting empathy over traditional punishment methods.
  • Life skills classes at National Public School now include 40-minute practical sessions focusing on respect and fairness, enhancing students' social understanding.
  • Saandeepani Academy is implementing a digital wellness framework this year, involving parents to manage students' screen time effectively.

In bid to foster moral values and tackle social isolation, Bengaluru schools under Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) have rolled out fresh initiatives this academic year . These programs aim to push learning past textbooks, tackling challenges of digital-heavy lifestyles.

One standout effort: “kindness table” at Delhi Public School (DPS) – Bangalore East. Here, students are nudged from just recognizing kindness to actively practicing it. Nidhi Cherian, head of school at DPS, said they invite nominations for students showing kindness, with input from entire school community—teachers and support staff included. Selected students get “Kindness in Action” badges and lunch with head of school, celebrating their contributions and hearing their stories.

Meanwhile,Saandeepani Academy of Excellence in Sompura uses “restorative circles” to tackle behavioral issues. Led by students, guided by teachers, these circles resolve conflicts through discussion, not punishment. Latha M.,the academy's director, stressed that punishment breeds fear and temporary compliance. Restorative practices? They build long-term empathy and understanding. Like when a student hurt by classmates' comments shared her feelings, prompting apologies and change.

This year, Saandeepani Academy also tackles digital wellness, with a framework managing screen time. Latha mentioned parents will join sessions to ensure healthy practices stick at home.

At National Public School, life skills classes have evolved. Formerly Moral Science, now they include practical sessions crafted by counselors for student needs. A faculty member noted these 40-minute weekly sessions cover themes like respect and fairness. Parents hear about these lessons, encouraging students to practice values at home. High schoolers dive into case studies on these themes for deeper understanding .

These initiatives show educators in Bengaluru recognize need to address not just academics but social and emotional growth too . By going beyond traditional teaching, schools aim to nurture empathy, resilience, and responsible digital citizens…
