After disappointment at 55th Kerala State Film Awards, Malayalam children's film School Chale Hum is gaining traction on OTT platforms. Directed by Merchant Navy officers Sreekanth E.G. and Adith U.S., the film was one of six in children's category but won nothing. Jury's decision stung; they said all entries lacked child's perspective and young actors didn't convincingly portray their ages .
Criticism surprised filmmakers . Much of School Chale Hum shows kids in relatable activities . Adith was shocked by jury's comments but relieved when film got into a children's festival in Finland same day . "That came as a relief, especially because the criticism was that the film did not have children's perspective," he remarked .
Despite limited budget and some execution challenges, film resonated with audiences after online release. The duo started with short films before diving into full-length feature. They shot in Kannur, Sreekanth's hometown,at Kammaran Master Memorial UP School in Morazha. During auditions there, they found young actors who fit their vision.
Filming was tight, just ten days during school vacation. First two days were a camp for kids to adjust to filmmaking and bond with crew. Adith noted, "With clear planning,we managed to finish the shooting inside the school within 10 days." Now,they're glad to see more viewers engaging with their work.
Independent films often struggle for visibility. Filmmakers hope positive OTT reception will spotlight their efforts. Adith emphasized film's intent and young cast's sincerity. As more discover School Chale Hum,filmmakers hope story resonates, showing there's audience eager for authentic narratives…
