A documentary on environmental impact of mining along South Africa's West Coast is making waves,snagging an award at Cannes Film Festival. Titled Out of Mined, it premiered to full houses at Cape Town's Labia Theatre, spotlighting a century of mining on the stunning coastline.
The film,from Protect the West Coast and Eyeforce, digs into diamond and heavy mineral mining's toll on local ecosystems and communities. Stretching 450 kilometers,it captures Western Cape's beauty while tackling decades of environmental damage.
Winning in Cannes' Work in Progress category, the award signals a big moment for the project. Protect the West Coast sees it as a chance to boost global awareness about mining's harmful effects here.
Director Arthur Neumeier thanked those involved,saying, “This award is an honour,but more importantly, it’s recognition for people who entrusted us with telling their story.” He wants to showcase the region's beauty and its many challenges.
The doc features voices of fishers,indigenous communities,scientists,and legal experts. It looks to set stage for sustainable industries that respect the land. With Cannes success,Out of Mined will tour international festivals,including Berlin Indie Film Festival and Green Montenegro International Film Festival.
