Tourism Development in Ouidah
To boost tourism, the government of Benin is turning to Chinese firms to revamp historic Ouidah. They're linking the old slave trade port with “Slave Route” and memorial sites . Aim: lively seaside attraction.
Visitors will come to a place heavy with history. Nearly 2 million enslaved Africans once walked that 2-kilometer path to the beach. At its end,the “Gate of No Return” — a monumental arch marking their tragic journeys .
Managed by Benin’s National Agency for Heritage Promotion and Tourism Development, this project seeks to lift the local economy with tourism. It started under former president Patrice Talon and continues with current President Wadagni, who took office May 24. He was finance minister then. Shows a steady vision.
By connecting a modern seaside complex with the slave route's history, this initiative aims to educate and spur growth. As Ouidah gears up for tourists, will it balance preserving history with new opportunities? Time will tell…
