At just 19,Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva clinched her first Grand Slam title, beating Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska in French Open final Saturday. Ranked eighth globally, Andreeva won decisively 6-3,6-2,becoming youngest female champion at Roland Garros since Monica Seles in 1992.
Chwalinska,ranked 114th, aimed to be first qualifier to take French Open. Started strong but faltered. Andreeva found her rhythm, winning nine straight games . Chwalinska's early lead vanished as Andreeva dominated,hitting 25 winners to Chwalinska's 10.
During trophy ceremony,Chwalinska acknowledged Andreeva's talent: “You’re so young and talented. It’s so annoying.” Andreeva celebrated with emotion,dropping to knees on clay after backhand winner on first match point . Expressed gratitude to herself for perseverance, saying,“Only I know how tough it was for me. How nervous I was throughout these two weeks.”
