Indian government set to approve ₹1.25 lakh crore for India Semiconductor Mission 2.0. Big boost for nation's chip-making ambitions. This funding surpasses ₹76,000 crore from first phase, showing India's intent to become a major semiconductor hub .
Sources say Expenditure Finance Committee will soon back this budget, then it heads to Cabinet for final nod. Move aligns with Union Budget 2026-27 goals to boost manufacturing, especially in semiconductors.
Mission aims to build full chip manufacturing ecosystem, focusing on equipment, materials, indigenous designs. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stressed local chip design, product development, attracting ecosystem partners, nurturing industry talent.
Under India Semiconductor Mission, 12 manufacturing projects approved, totaling ₹1.64 lakh crore investment . Includes semiconductor fab unit, two compound semiconductor fab units, nine packaging units. Government supports 24 projects conductor design.
Efforts led to 105 companies getting advanced chip design tools,23 design 'tapeouts' completed at various foundries, including advanced nodes. IT Ministry official called these developments a "long-time dream" for India, noting semiconductor sector's importance in tech scene .
Earlier this year, two approved semiconductor projects started commercial production, with CG Semi slated to launch this week. Official noted,"CG Semi's inauguration is scheduled for July 4...and then probably one or two more [will happen] before year's end,so our dream of commercial semiconductor manufacturing in the country has finally been achieved." Momentum grows in India's semiconductor industry.
As India cements role in global tech market,it's seen as key player in setting standards. Government's strategic moves aim to meet domestic semiconductor needs and compete globally. But will these plans fully materialize…?
