Five people died when an under-construction warehouse collapsed in Kolkata's Taratala area Wednesday afternoon. About 18 workers got trapped under rubble,prompting a swift rescue response.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari arrived at scene with several Cabinet ministers. He said 21 people were rescued,though three later died. Communication's been established with those still trapped,every effort ongoing to bring them out.
Some 50 to 60 workers were at site when structure fell. Indian Army's leading rescue ops with four columns from Eastern Command. They're coordinating with NDRF,SDRF and local police.
Cranes and gas cutters are in play to clear debris,free trapped workers. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA) has sent fire brigade units,security teams to ensure coordination,safety on ground.
In wake of incident,Chief Minister Adhikari suspended all under-construction commercial projects approved by prior government until July 31 . Cited flawed building plan as initial finding. "All under-construction activities under Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) area will remain suspended until audit conducted," he stated .
Warehouse at B/2 Transport Depot Road was being developed by M/s Behera Brothers on a 30-year SMPA lease. It was to include a multi-storied warehouse and cold storage.
