Industry leaders are pushing Hong Kong to remove barriers that are holding back its yacht economy. This comes after Beijing recently eased rules for yachts from Hong Kong and Macau entering mainland cities in the Greater Bay Area. The city is looking to seize new chances in maritime tourism .
Tommy Ho Wai-lok,head of Hong Kong Yachting Association, stressed the need for better immigration processes, improved mooring facilities, and tailored tourism itineraries. He noted that regulations force visiting yachts to have a representative present travel documents at government pier in Central within 24 hours of arrival. This rule has scared off wealthy visitors worried about their privacy and safety when sharing ID.
“Hong Kong can consider taking reference from the mainland ports, which provide immigration services for travellers on yachts … It can address their privacy concerns,”Ho said, proposing a model that could make things easier for yacht owners.
Starting next month, Hong Kong will let yachts anchor in designated areas without needing to book spot at private clubs or piers. This change should make access easier and draw more visitors to city’s growing yacht tourism scene .
