Severe weather has gripped the Delhi-NCR region, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert. Residents awoke to cooler temperatures on Saturday following a night marked by heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, with speeds reaching up to 80 km/h in some areas.
The IMD warned of intense thunderstorms and lightning, advising the public to stay indoors during these conditions. Authorities cautioned that adverse weather could disrupt daily commuting and road traffic . People are urged to avoid taking shelter under trees and to steer clear of waterlogged roads and electric poles.
Following the rainfall, temperatures in Delhi dropped significantly. On Friday, the maximum temperature at Safdarjung, the city’s main weather station, was recorded at 34.6°C,which is 5.3°C below normal. The minimum temperature fell to 22.8°C,nearly 5.2°C below the seasonal average. The IMD forecasts a maximum temperature of around 37°C and a minimum near 23°C for Saturday.
Throughout the day, light to moderate rainfall is expected to persist across Delhi and its neighboring cities, with isolated areas potentially experiencing stronger storm activity. The IMD also reported that several parts of the National Capital Region and nearby states could face winds between 60 and 80 km/h, along with possibility of hailstorms.
Looking ahead, the weather is anticipated to remain unstable over the next few days. From June 14 to June 16,the IMD predicts cloudy skies, intermittent rain, and thunderstorms, with strong winds likely during this period. Meteorologists indicate that the ongoing rainfall could keep temperatures 2°C to 4°C below normal, offering relief from intense heat that has characterized the region in recent weeks .
Officials continue to urge residents to stay informed about weather advisories and to adhere to safety recommendations, especially during thunderstorms and high winds . The IMD’s warnings reflect a broader concern for public safety as the region navigates through this severe weather pattern.
