Indian Air Force (IAF) moves forward with Final Operational Clearance (FOC) for its homegrown Netra Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system, delivered by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Nine years after Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) in 2017, it's now ready for full deployment.
Netra,India's first AEW&C,built on Brazilian Embraer EMB-145 aircraft . Designed to spot airborne threats over vast distances. Ground radars fall short; terrain and Earth's curve limit them . But Netra flies high, watching wide airspaces, catching aircraft, missiles, drones early.
With advanced Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar,Netra doesn't need mechanical rotation. Tracks multiple targets quickly, accurately. System includes sophisticated tech: Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR), Electronic Support Measures (ESM),secure comms…plus air-to-air refueling for longer missions.
Data from sensors processed through smart software, creating clear operational picture . Operators pinpoint threats, assign targets, coordinate combat . AEW&C systems like Netra offer early warnings, guide friendly forces.
Netra proved itself during Balakot air strikes,Operation Sindoor. Reliable, providing continuous surveillance, improving situational awareness. FOC shows system's strength after rigorous testing,a win for DRDO,IAF,Indian industry.
Netra's success cuts India's reliance on foreign surveillance gear, boosting local defense manufacturing. IAF now operates six early warning aircraft: three homegrown Netra, three Phalcon AWACS . No. 200 Squadron in Bhisiana,Punjab, already uses Netra in operations.
Future plans include expanding fleet with six upgraded Netra Mk-1A aircraft, featuring better electronic warfare systems, improved radar. And Rs 19,000-crore Netra Mk-2 program will bring six Airbus A321-based AEW&C jets, spotting threats over 500 km,enhancing mission reach .
As warfare turns stealthy, relies on drones, systems like Netra keep air superiority. FOC for Netra marks more than just program success; it's step toward self-reliant,stronger Indian Air Force. But is this enough for changing times…
