The government of Kerala is set to launch a school-level campaign aimed at raising awareness about epidemic prevention, starting Tuesday. This initiative, a collaboration between the Health and Education departments, will be inaugurated by K. Muraleedharan, the Health Minister, at Cotton Hill GHSS. Students throughout the state will participate in cleanliness pledge, administered by N. Samsudheen, the General Education Minister, to reinforce the importance of hygiene in combating infectious diseases.
The campaign stems from recommendations made by a High Power Committee formed to address the rising threat of infectious diseases. With recent reports of waterborne illnesses like shigellosis and the looming risk of dengue fever during the monsoon season, the initiative seeks to educate children on essential preventive measures. Unhygienic conditions, contaminated water, and food sources contribute significantly to these health risks.
Key to the campaign is the focus on eliminating breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquito, which spreads dengue. This can be achieved by preventing waterlogging around homes. By instilling knowledge about cleanliness and personal hygiene, the program aims to empower students to take proactive steps in safeguarding their health and that of their communities.
