Visitors are flocking to Ladakh in droves — over 43% more in first five months of 2026 compared to last year. Better infrastructure,improved connectivity,ongoing promotions fueling this surge, says Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena.
May alone saw a staggering 121.20% rise,with 72,834 tourists compared to 32,927 in May 2025. From January to May 2026,Ladakh drew 117,546 tourists, up from 81,827 in same period 2025. A 43.65% rise .
Known for stunning landscapes,pristine lakes,ancient monasteries,Ladakh is often called "cold desert." But winter brings challenges, heavy snow cuts off key highways.
Saxena shared these numbers on social media platform X, excited by influx. He praised efforts making Ladakh a top tourist spot. "Delighted to share Ladakh has seen a major surge in tourist arrivals this year," he said.
Key attractions like Pangong Lake and Nubra Valley are pulling more crowds . Nubra Valley, famous for sand dunes,double-humped Bactrian camels, is bustling. Pangong Lake remains major magnet.
Lieutenant Governor credits this boom to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's domestic travel push and infrastructure improvements. Growth is a hopeful sign for local businesses,relying on tourism .
"I thank all tourists visiting Ladakh,invite people from across country to experience nature, adventure, peace, culture, spirituality, clean air, serene atmosphere in Ladakh," Saxena added .
This revival follows a slump after Pahalgam terror attack,Operation Sindoor, which led to travel advisories,airspace restrictions last year. Now,with normalcy returning, numbers bounce back,bringing hope to local economy.
Despite global uncertainties,domestic tourism remains strong,with steady visitors at spots like Khardung La. Local hotels,homestays report high occupancy rates. Interest is back .
