Maharashtra saw grim tally in 2023: 6,669 farmers and agricultural laborers took their own lives, Makrand Patil confirmed during assembly session June 25,2026. NCRB data shows 4,150 were farmers, 2,519 were agricultural workers, including 77 women.
Patil responded to a query from Dharamraobaba Atram, an MLA with NCP. Concerns have been raised over how these deaths are classified and if all eligible agricultural workers are counted. When asked about 29 farm laborers without land being left out of the suicide tally,Patil admitted it was "partially true," but offered no more details.
These figures expose deep-rooted problems plaguing agriculture, where economic strain and mental health issues batter farmers and families. Government's data management has stirred debate on whether support systems for those in crisis are enough .
