Government of Tamil Nadu plans to announce order for free distribution of dhotis,sarees during upcoming Pongal festival . Minister for Handlooms,Textiles and Khadi,M. Vijay Balaji,said order should come by month's end or early July — earlier than usual October or November timeline.
Balaji emphasized initiative's aim: benefit both weavers,public,ensuring free distribution hits its mark. Revenue Department will assess boosting saree and dhoti production for this scheme.
In related move,T.N. Venkatesh, Principal Secretary of Textiles, Handlooms, Khadi and Handicrafts,announced plans to study each handloom cluster across state. This will provide targeted help to sustain hand weaving,boosting local artisans' livelihoods.
