Actors Mallika Sukumaran and Lakshmipriya quit their primary memberships in Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) after a chaotic general body meeting in Kochi . Resignations follow no-confidence motion against leadership, criticized for handling organization’s affairs.
On June 22, 2026,Sukumaran voiced support for Shwetha Menon,AMMA's first female president, who stepped down a day before. She stressed her commitment to “truth and justice” as reason to leave. Lakshmipriya, former vice-president, also resigned, saying some members came with preset agendas.
17-member executive committee resigned amid accusations of mismanagement and ignoring internal disputes. Lakshmipriya denied claims committee couldn't present financial report, blaming previous committee for not finalizing accounts. “We could not present full report in view of the failure of the previous committee to finalise the accounts,” she explained.
With these exits, Ramesh Pisharody has been appointed to lead an ad-hoc panel to manage AMMA's operations. Recent upheaval in AMMA signals a change in leadership dynamics… What direction will the organization take now?
