Beginning July 1, Munnar panchayat will implement a ban on single-use plastics and water bottles under 500 ml in an effort to tackle plastic pollution, as stated by panchayat president Mr. Vijayakumar. This initiative also features the introduction of water ATMs, priced at ₹5 per liter, to ensure tourists have access to clean drinking water. Two of these ATMs have already been constructed at a cost of ₹8 lakh.

Starting July 1, Munnar panchayat rolls out plastic ban in popular hill station. Aims to tackle growing plastic pollution. Will happen in phases — first targets single-use plastics,water bottles under 500 ml.

Mr. Vijayakumar,panchayat president, stressed urgency of tackling plastic waste,calling it a threat to Munnar's environment. “Without addressing plastic waste dumping,we cannot effectively manage waste treatment in Munnar,” he said . To help compliance, water ATMs will be set up around town,giving tourists access to clean drinking water. Each liter costs ₹5. Two ATMs already built,costing ₹8 lakh. Launch soon,more if successful.

Alongside plastic ban,Munnar panchayat working with Devikulam panchayat to enforce rules. Meeting with Devikulam officials on Monday to plan joint efforts. Both panchayats to add surcharge on tourist vehicles starting Onam vacation .
