NCERT clarifies textbook content, denies ideological bias in Class 6 Kannada R3 book

Key Takeaways

  • NCERT's Class 6 Kannada R3 Textbook is named 'Krishna' to align with a convention that includes titles like 'Ganga' and 'Kaveri'.
  • Critics claim Chapter 6, 'Health is Wealth', promotes vegetarianism, while NCERT insists it advocates for a balanced diet.
  • The illustrative image on page 63 of the textbook features predominantly vegetarian items, raising concerns from the Kannada Development Authority.
  • Purushotham Bilimale, KDA Chairman, criticized NCERT's explanation, calling it a 'false explanation' regarding dietary representation.
  • The ongoing debate reflects broader tensions in India over educational content and its impact on cultural identity and dietary practices.

On Thursday, NCERT pushed back against concerns about naming Class 6 Kannada R3 Textbook “Krishna.” The council dismissed claims of promoting any religious or cultural ideology. Instead, NCERT explained it's part of naming system based on Indian rivers. Hindi textbook is “Ganga,” English is “Kaveri,” Urdu is “Jamuna” (Yamuna).

But critics in Karnataka, including educationists, argue book shows bias against non-vegetarian food. They say Chapter 6,“Health is Wealth,” pushes vegetarianism. NCERT disagrees. Says chapter focuses on balanced diet, exercise, cleanliness. Page 63 image shows both vegetarian and non-vegetarian items, they insist.

Yet that image mainly shows fruits, vegetables, cereals, pulses, eggs. No meat or fish. This omission didn't sit well with KDA. Chairman Purushotham Bilimale and officials hit back, saying balanced diet needs non-vegetarian options, which aren't shown enough in textbook . Called NCERT's response a “false explanation.”

NCERT’s response comes as debates rage over educational content in India. Cultural representation and dietary choices are hot buttons. How these materials impact cultural identity…
