On Thursday, NCERT pushed back against concerns about naming Class 6 Kannada R3 Textbook “Krishna.” The council dismissed claims of promoting any religious or cultural ideology. Instead, NCERT explained it's part of naming system based on Indian rivers. Hindi textbook is “Ganga,” English is “Kaveri,” Urdu is “Jamuna” (Yamuna).
But critics in Karnataka,including educationists,argue book shows bias against non-vegetarian food. They say Chapter 6,“Health is Wealth,” pushes vegetarianism. NCERT disagrees. Says chapter focuses on balanced diet,exercise,cleanliness. Page 63 image shows both vegetarian and non-vegetarian items,they insist.
Yet that image mainly shows fruits,vegetables,cereals,pulses,eggs. No meat or fish. This omission didn't sit well with KDA. Chairman Purushotham Bilimale and officials hit back,saying balanced diet needs non-vegetarian options,which aren't shown enough in textbook . Called NCERT's response a “false explanation.”
