In long-awaited move,over 250 officers of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) finally got their first promotion after waiting 14 to 15 years. The promotion, affecting 263 Assistant Commandant-rank officers, was announced June 26, 2026,following Supreme Court ruling clarifying issues around seniority and vacancies within force.
CRPF,India's primary internal security force, called promotion a milestone on social media. A senior officer pointed out this should have happened within five years of their appointment. Delay was frustrating. "This will boost morale for officers who waited so long," the officer said.
Even with promotion,new officers will stay in current roles for now. CRPF blamed "operational and administrative constraints" for delay in new posting orders. But impact expected to echo through ranks, as future promotions to Assistant Commandant will come from Inspector rank,creating ripple effect.
CRPF, with about 325,000 personnel, has faced challenges with promotion stagnation . In April, G.P. Singh, Director General of CRPF,assured officers that efforts were underway to tackle these issues. Recent promotions seen as step in easing concerns,especially as they continue operations against Naxal violence,insurgencies in northeast and Jammu and Kashmir.
