Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters admires captain Ronwen Williams, who's come far since a rough start in 2014. Back then,Williams took heat after South Africa's 5-0 loss to Brazil at FNB Stadium. People questioned if he belonged at international level .
Now,Williams is celebrated as one of Africa's best. Walters believes Williams will show his skills again on global stage. “For me,we’ve always said it, goalkeepers mature with games, with experiences, with situations,” Walters noted. Williams has plenty of years left to play strong . He compared him to Denis Onyango, still performing at 41.
Walters talked about resilience shaping Williams. He wondered how Williams handled early setbacks. Did he see them as obstacles or chances to grow? “Did he take it as a knock or did he say, look, this is something that’s actually going to help me grow as player,as a footballer,as goalkeeper?” Walters remarked.
Williams’ move from SuperSport United to Mamelodi Sundowns four years ago was big for his career . Walters said it boosted his responsibilities and let him shine in high-pressure games, like the Champions League. “So I think all of those things have really helped him and groomed him to become a very good goalkeeper,” Walters stated. He confidently said Williams could be among world's top 20 goalkeepers.
As South Africa gears up for match against Mexico, all eyes will be on Williams. Will he further cement his legacy as a key player for national team…?
