Sitronics KT and Emperium Group are launching a bold project to develop semi-autonomous ferries for Ob River crossing in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District. Announced June 30, this is a tie-up between AFK Sistema subsidiaries and regional government,Sitronics said .
Project aims to address hurdles like fleet upgrades,improving transport safety in Far North's tough climate . Sitronics KT,known for maritime tech,said new ferries will boost capacity and lengthen navigation season,which now runs 146-179 days yearly.
If realized,Yamal-Nenets could lead in Russia with electric ferries using autonomous tech. These vessels designed for Salekhard-Labytnangi route's unique water and weather conditions,where about 13,800 trips happen each year.
Hybrid ferries will cut through ice up to 20 cm thick,speeding at 16 km/h. Each ferry fits 28 cars,10 trucks,80 passengers, crew of four . This is a big move for transport in Russia's tough terrain…but will it deliver?
