Tamil Nadu's decision to hand planning authority for high-rise buildings to Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is winning applause from real estate developers. CREDAI says this move should speed up project approvals in Chennai Metropolitan Area.
W.S. Habib,CREDAI Tamil Nadu's President, stressed importance of this change. He explained how old process dragged through various stages: application, field inspections, reviews by High-Rise Building Committee, finally a government order. Each step had its role, but together they caused big holdups .
Giving CMDA power to approve or reject plans based on Committee recommendations simplifies things. “This is a very important and timely reform for Chennai’s real estate sector,” Habib said .
CREDAI Tamil Nadu now wants government to extend this model to Coimbatore,Madurai,Tiruchirappalli. Habib noted Coimbatore and Madurai already have Urban Development Authorities, urban planning areas set up.
He emphasized need for these cities to establish their own planning and development authorities. Local control could cut down on delays, lessen reliance on Chennai for big decisions. Could this be the start of faster progress across Tamil Nadu…?
