Telangana's sweltering in June, with districts seeing high temps even after southwest monsoon's arrival . A short break from showers had brought relief just a week ago. But GNRS Srinivas,Senior Meteorologist at India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Hyderabad, says sluggish monsoon and lack of clouds are main culprits.
Monsoon hit Telangana June 8,but it's crawling. Normally covers state in two-three days. Now,almost ten days later, only half state feels it. Conditions in neighboring Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh not helping, making it worse .
Even where monsoon's landed, moisture's low, clouds sparse. Northern Telangana's still getting dry northwesterly winds from northern plains and Rajasthan. More like May weather. Usually, southwesterlies counter this, bringing down temps. This year, they're too weak to fight northern winds, resulting in heat sticking around.
IMD had forecast widespread rain from June 19 to June 23,but weakening monsoon winds means that's changed . Mr. Srinivas said,“We were expecting good rains across the State from June 19 onwards. But the speed of the monsoonal winds has reduced and outlook for the next two to three days appears bleak.”
Improvement might come June 22 or June 23,when monsoon's expected to cover rest of Telangana. “Once the monsoon covers the entire State and cloudiness increases, temperatures will come down . But at this stage,we cannot be very sure because situation is changing,” he added.
Mr. Srinivas called this season peculiar, blaming El Niño and slow monsoon for bizarre weather. Summer-like heat dragging on despite monsoon's formal start…
