Several artists have withdrawn from the upcoming Freedom 250 concert, citing concerns over its political affiliations. The event, scheduled for June 25 to July 10 on National Mall in Washington,D.C., aims to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States . However, performers like rapper Young MC and country singer Martina McBride have expressed that they were misled about event's non-partisan nature.
Freedom 250, a nonprofit organization established under the Trump administration, announced the lineup for the festival earlier this week. Despite its claim of being non-political, many artists have opted out, leading to a wave of criticism. Young MC, known for his hit "Bust a Move," stated on social media that he was unaware of any political involvement and looked forward to performing at a future event that would be less politically charged.
Following Young MC's announcement, other artists quickly followed suit . Morris Day,the frontman of Morris Day and The Time, declared on Instagram,"It's A No For Me," confirming his withdrawal. Commodores also posted on social media, stating,"Our music has always been our voice and we choose not to publicly affiliate with any single political party." McBride echoed similar sentiments, revealing that she had been led to believe the event would be nonpartisan.
In a lengthy statement, Bret Michaels, the lead singer of Poison, expressed his disappointment, saying the event had transformed into something divisive . He cited safety concerns as a factor in his decision to withdraw. Despite the backlash, some artists remain committed to performing. Vanilla Ice, whose real name is Robert Matthew Van Winkle, insisted that concert is not a political platform but rather a celebration of America's birthday . He shared this sentiment in a video post on Instagram.
Freedom 250 has yet to announce any changes to its lineup . Rachel Reisner, a spokeswoman for the organization, emphasized the importance of unity, stating,"There is far too much to celebrate about this great nation to let noise and division distract from the incredible moment ahead." Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has hinted at possibly delivering a "major speech" during event, referring to the artists who dropped out as "third rate." He suggested that he might hold a rally in the same location at the same time, calling it an "AMERICA IS BACK Rally" and inviting "Great Patriots" only .
As the event approaches, the White House is backing various activities to commemorate the anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. These include a UFC fight on South Lawn and the Great American State Fair, alongside plans for a Grand Prix race in August. Amidst the controversy, the government is also set to release limited-edition commemorative passports featuring Trump's portrait.
