Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar,Member of Parliament for Mysuru and Kodagu, urged Indian government to craft long-term plan for ongoing human-elephant conflict in Kodagu . In New Delhi meeting with Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav,Wadiyar stressed urgency . Elephant incursions into farms and homes have caused deaths, property losses and rising fear among locals.
Farmers and plantation workers near forest edges suffer most. Wadiyar pitched a broad mitigation strategy: stronger elephant-proof barriers, more solar fencing, scientific tracking of elephant paths. Early warning systems, better habitats, rapid response teams also on his list.
Wadiyar also pressed for more compensation and aid for families hit by elephant attacks and crop damage. While wildlife conservation matters,he said,it's just as crucial to protect people living near forests.
Urban Forest Initiative
Wadiyar separately asked for Tippayyana Kere, lake near Mysuru's Outer Ring Road,to join Nagar Van (Urban Forest) scheme . He called it a growing biodiversity hub and potential recreation spot. Its inclusion could boost Mysuru's green areas and biodiversity conservation.
The MP pointed out Tippayyana Kere's ecological value,as a home to various bird species and wildlife. He sought technical and financial backing from Ministry to support the project, which he believes could enhance environmental education and improve life quality for locals.
After talks,Wadiyar repeated call for swift action from both central and state governments on Kodagu elephant issue and Mysuru's urban green spaces. Union Minister assured him proposals would be reviewed, appropriate steps taken with relevant authorities…
