Construction of Zojila Tunnel in India hits major milestone as it nears completion . This tunnel will become the longest bi-directional road tunnel at high altitude worldwide, linking Ladakh and Kashmir Valley. Winter snow often cuts off region, but tunnel promises better connectivity.
Under Zojila Pass on Srinagar-Kargil-Leh highway,it aims to be a reliable all-weather route between Leh and Srinagar. Important for civilians and Indian Army, ensuring safe passage to Ladakh in harsh winters. Region now faces months of isolation yearly, but tunnel's finish could ease these issues.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid foundation stone for 13.153 km tunnel in May 2018. Megha Engineering took charge in 2020. Completion expected by end of 2028, costing Rs 6,809 crore. Civil works alone take up Rs 4,509 crore. A 17-kilometer access road built to support the work.
Project hasn't been easy. Faced tough geography, low oxygen levels at sites. Yet,it's an engineering feat with modern tech — CCTV,advanced ventilation, radio communication, traffic monitoring.
Zojila Tunnel part of larger push to boost regional connectivity. Joins other key tunnels in India like 9.28 km Chenani-Nashri Tunnel,8.45 km Banihal-Qazigund Tunnel, 6.5 km Z-Morh Tunnel in Sonamarg, and 9 km Atal Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh at 10,000 feet.
As Zojila Tunnel nears finish line, looks set to cut travel times. But will it also spark economic growth in region struggling with winter isolation…?
