The Iranian national football team will only be permitted entry into United States on the days of their World Cup matches, according to Abolfazl Pasandideh, Iran's ambassador to Mexico. This restriction means players can arrive in the morning but must depart the same day,as
Pasandideh spoke to reporters in Tijuana, where he expressed concern over the U.S. government's denial of visas to 15 officials from Iranian Football Federation. With tournament set to kick off on June 11,the ambassador remains hopeful that these officials will receive their visas in time for Iran's opening match against New Zealand on June 15.
Among those affected by the visa issues is Mehdi Taj,the president of Iran's football federation. He criticized U.S. for its actions, calling them malicious and questioning what further "shameful acts" might occur at the airport. Taj also indicated that Iran is formally protesting to FIFA,the governing body of international football.
All members of Iranian squad have successfully secured visas to enter Mexico, which is co-hosting the tournament alongside the U.S. and Canada. However, all of Iran's group matches will take place in the U.S. The team’s first two games are scheduled for Los Angeles, where they will face New Zealand and Belgium on June 15 and June 21, respectively. They will then play Egypt on June 26 in Seattle, Washington .
Concerns over the Iranian team's participation have been heightened by the ongoing tensions between Iran and the U.S., which escalated in February. Initially, there were doubts about whether the team would be able to compete in the tournament at all. In response to the visa situation, the Iranian federation announced in May that it would move team's training camp from Arizona to Tijuana, just south of San Diego.
As World Cup approaches, the Iranian team is navigating a complex landscape marked by political tensions and logistical challenges. The situation underscores the intersection of sports and international relations, particularly as teams prepare for one of the world's most prestigious sporting events.
