The ongoing discussions in Qatar between Iranian officials and the United States mark a significant diplomatic effort amid backdrop of military tensions that have persisted for months. These negotiations follow a recent agreement aimed at de-escalating the conflict, which has sparked intense air assaults on Iranian territory .
Despite the talks, military readiness remains a priority for Israeli forces, who have signaled their preparedness to initiate large-scale attacks if required. Israel's Defence Minister,Israel Katz, mentioned that potential targets are already known, reinforcing that the military remains ready to act should diplomatic efforts fail or should Iran decide to engage in attacks against Israel . Katz also issued a stark warning regarding Iran’s newly appointed supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, whom he described as “marked for death.”
In retaliation, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi asserted that any threats against the nation's leadership would lead to immediate and forceful responses. The situation raises concerns about Iran’s military effectiveness after the extensive assault it has faced from advanced military forces.
In a span of less than 40 days, US military reported targeting over 13,000 sites within Iran, while Israeli forces claimed to have struck around 10,800 locations, specifically targeting military and industrial sectors. These operations sought to undermine Iran’s capabilities related to ballistic and cruise missiles, drone manufacturing, and air defense systems.
Despite sustaining significant damage,Iran’s military framework remains operational. While its command structure endured substantial hits, the country continues to conduct military actions across the region. Satellite imagery coupled with local reports indicates concerted effort to weaken Iran's military infrastructure, yet many facilities appear to still function.
approximately 60 percent of Iran’s missile launchers and around 250 air defense units were incapacitated. Notable military sites, such as the Parchin and Khojir complexes near Tehran, were heavily bombarded, along with naval bases in Bandar Abbas and missile installations in Isfahan and Yazd.
The prospect of a ground invasion of Iran has also been discussed by the US government, although this would be expected to escalate costs and prolong the operation beyond that of airstrikes. During congressional testimony,Brad Cooper, head of the US Central Command (CENTCOM),reported that over 85 percent of Iran's capabilities related to ballistic missiles and drones have sustained severe damage.
Casualties have also impacted Iran’s air force, with numerous aging aircraft and helicopters lost. The sinking of the IRIS Dena, unarmed vessel, was a notable incident resulting in the deaths of 104 crew members. President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction regarding the loss of Iranian ships, suggesting they could have been utilized by US forces.
In addition to military objectives,US and Israeli operations have targeted civilian infrastructures, such as oil and gas facilities, steel production sites, and educational institutions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that a substantial percentage of Iran’s steel production capacity had been eliminated, which directly affects missile production capabilities. Reports also indicated significant damage to the Asaluyeh petrochemical complex, severely impacting Iran's capacity to export petrochemical products.
In aftermath of assaults,Iranian authorities are reportedly making strides to rebuild some of their military capabilities . Considerable segments of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) underground missile network remain operational, with several sites reopening following initial strikes. CENTCOM has noted that nearly 1,500 airstrikes targeted arms manufacturing facilities, significantly curtailing Iran’s production of ballistic missiles and drones.
However, US media reports indicate that Iran’s military recovery may be more rapid than expected, with some drone manufacturing reportedly resuming operations. CENTCOM later disputed claims that Iran retained approximately 70 percent of its military strength from before the conflict, suggesting an intricate and dynamic situation as negotiations unfold .
