The Kozhikode Corporation is set to launch carbon audit aimed at tackling air pollution in city. This initiative, supported by the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) and the Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA), was announced by deputy mayor S. Jayasree during presentation of the Corporation’s Budget for 2026-27.
An initial allocation of ₹10 lakh has been earmarked for projects that will emerge from audit's findings. Officials indicated that the CWRDM is currently preparing a detailed project report, which is anticipated soon. “The CWRDM has already submitted an initial proposal, and now we expect them to come up with a detailed project report,” a corporation official stated. The audit is designed to be an ongoing effort, rather than one-off assessment.
The carbon audit will evaluate emissions across various sectors within Kozhikode, helping Corporation pinpoint significant sources of pollution. This data will be crucial for developing targeted strategies to reduce the city’s carbon footprint. Additionally, the audit is expected to provide baseline data that will track changes in air quality over time.
In tandem with the carbon audit, the Corporation plans to implement project called ‘Haritha Residence’ in collaboration with local residents’ associations. This initiative aims to enhance both air and water quality within city limits, with detailed planning conducted in consultation with community members.
Further enhancing city’s environmental efforts, the Budget also includes a proposal to renovate Mananchira as part of a City Beautification project, transforming it into a natural “oxygen parlour” for residents and visitors alike. These initiatives reflect Kozhikode's commitment to fostering a healthier urban environment.
