Millions gathered in Tehran to honor former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Dignitaries from various countries attended. But successor Mojtaba Khamenei was noticeably absent, stirring public concern over Iran's security.

Mojtaba hasn't been seen publicly since February 28 Israeli airstrike killed his father, wife Zahra Haddad-Adel,and other family members. Iranian officials cite assassination threats for his absence. Yet many citizens question what this silence means. “My country is no longer Iran of old, where the leader is publicly present,” said 26-year-old Masoumeh . “Mojtaba’s absence is irrelevant. But his presence signals the country’s security.”

During the funeral,Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned Mojtaba that threats against Israel would be met with force. Katz accused late Khamenei of plotting Israel's destruction. This speech fuels tensions between Iran and Israel, especially after recent attacks on Iranian leaders.

Despite Mojtaba's absence, many family members, including Ali Khamenei’s other sons, attended. The ceremonies mixed mourning with speculation. “I think people are justified in saying that there is no need to see him in person right now,” said 35-year-old Faezeh. She compared it to belief in unseen figures, suggesting public appearances aren't always crucial for leadership.

But Mojtaba's lack of public engagement has sparked health rumors. Reports suggest he suffered serious injuries in the airstrike, including facial and possible leg injuries. Skipping his wife and father's funeral has some questioning Iran's portrayal of stability. “It seems there is conspiracy at work,” said 47-year-old Somayeh, hinting the government might be manipulating public perception.

Iran's leaders typically avoid constant public appearances, relying on representatives and media. Yet Mojtaba's unusual absence is notable. Political analyst Negar Mortazavi noted while leaders often stay out of sight, past supreme leaders were seen as unifying figures. “They can’t hide him forever,” Mortazavi warned. Public patience is finite.

The ongoing uncertainty around Mojtaba Khamenei's health and security highlights a broader instability within Iran. As the nation mourns its former leader, the question of who will fill void looms...
