Regular drinking water supply for households in Vellore Corporation limits resumes Monday, June 8 . This after Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) finishes pipeline realignments. Changes completed Sunday along Old Bypass Road by fort complex in Old Town.
TWAD officials said realignment was necessary for foundation pillars of new Road Over Bridge by Southern Railway. Project aims to boost infrastructure, fix water seepage issues that have hit supply to tail-end areas .
“Water supply by TWAD remains crucial for meeting domestic needs within Corporation limits,” said R . Lakshman, Commissioner. Local sources also essential in meeting community demands.
Existing pipelines start from Muthu Mandapam near bus terminus off Chennai-Bengaluru Highway (NH 48). They're linked to two pumping stations in Old Town . One on Filter Bed Road holds 3.9 million liters, another at Allapuram stores 1.5 million liters. Combined, they serve nearly half of Vellore's 800,000 residents across 60 wards in four zones.
Vellore, known for its dry climate, struggles with water scarcity, especially in summer . “Water from civic body is a crucial resource,” said Prema, local resident.
As part of realignment,TWAD shifted 700 mm pipelines to extreme edge of 40-foot-wide stretch, moving them 7.5 meters from central spot. This adjustment covers about 120 meters along route, allowing bridge construction while keeping water supply steady.
Corporation officials said new pipeline positions will simplify future repairs, allowing maintenance without traffic disruption. Damaged areas from pipeline work to be fixed by TWAD before returning site to State Highways.
Vellore's total water demand is 83 million liters/day,with TWAD supplying 63 million liters. Local sources like borewells in Otteri Lake and Ponnai River bed used to cover any shortfall. How long can this patchwork hold…
